Burning Man serves as a social experiment in which approximately 80,000 individuals come together to reside temporarily in a locale referred to as Black Rock City (BRC) for a duration of one week annually, set amidst the Black Rock Desert in Nevada. This urban layout stands as the largest piece of art showcased during the event and was initially conceived and designed by Rod Garrett on behalf of the organization back in 1997.

The collaborative development of this shared 3D model of BRC represents an exploration of technology, encompassing both the creation of the model itself and its online dissemination. This endeavor was undertaken jointly by Jamen Percy, Mike Heath, and Arash Keissami. Jamen, a proficient photographer and a member of the Black Rock City documentation team, captured several hundred drone images of BRC on Thursday, August 31, 2023, after securing the necessary drone permit and permissions to fly over the camps. Mike Heath, an experienced drone pilot and 3D photogrammetry modeler, conceived the idea of crafting and sharing a detailed 3D model of the entire city with the public, ultimately bringing the project to fruition.
